Why can’t the US do this? If we did, maybe more people would ride the subway than drive?

You know, I’m from Stockholm, Sweden and I’ve been riding this subway all of my life. One of the pictures is taken on my home station.
I’ve never actually thought about how good looking our subway looks compared to other countries.
And after looking at these pictures I actually do think it’s quite cool.
Shows how people take things for granted eh?

Total win! A beautiful way to take the mundane and make it fantastic.

It’s really too bad that, if it was done in America, people would probably destroy it with graffiti, and once it was ruined, we would accuse the government of wasting money to make things beautiful. That’s not what money is for in America.

wow!! i thought we had some cool subway stations in nyc but i have to admit that this is truly amazing. but…it’s not the same without bums and performers in the background. that’s what makes the nyc train stations.. hmmmm…special. kudos to the artists.

Being A NYC guy my whole life, you take for granted our filthy subway system is the result of overuse, after seeing not only the beauty, but the cleanliness of this subway, you realize who is to blame for our system. This is an eye opener, good job, Rich.

This is cool – but subways are *mass* transit systems. Where are all
    the people?

I just came back from a trip to Tokyo, Shanghai and Beijing and their transit systems are (a) not as pretty as this, at all, but (b) *crowded* – moving millions of people every day.

This is fake, just to let everyone know. I haven’t been in ALL of Stockholms subway stations but Stockholm is the only Swedish city with a subway and I’ve never seen any of this. The image with the rainbow in the roof is real, at most.

  29. Tomas
    Posted December 4, 2010 at 5:25 pm | Permalink

    @Yeah

Fake? I’m from Stockholm and I pass these stations every day, they look like this. I’ve always just taken them for granted though.

Also, they’re usually more crowded but we’re nowhere near transporting the amount of people cities like Tokyo or NYC does. Remember there’s only about 2 million people in the larger metropolitan area of Stockholm, as opposed to 35 million for Tokyo and 19 million for NYC.

I am decently proud of our mass transit in general though.

    @Yeah

You’re such a lier. I bet that you never have been in Sweden and Stockholm at all if you’re for real. I’m from Stockholm and I see this daily. Every morning and every eve, week-days as week-ends.

If you’ve been in Stockholm and been using the public transport a lot, as you say, then you should have known that we have several subway-lines as well, and that it’s the blue-one that got the most of the “heavy” art that are shown in this article.

You really deserve face-palm (if you are not a troll).

These are all photos from Stockholm’s subway. I am from Sweden, live in Stockholm and I recognize every single photo. The Pacman gohst is at the station Torildsplan and it is too bad they didn’t have more from there cause it is an 8-bit dream.

So, don’t believe those who say it is fake. I will however say that if the station is full of people you wouldn’t notice this stuff as much. Also, the photos have been post processed enhancing colors and lights. That is how everything looks so vibrant. More than in real life.

But try riding the Stockholm subway with open eyes next time and you will see all this!

High taxes and a belief that culture and art is important and therefore worthy taxpayer money make this possible.

@PhJ: I agree. there should be more pictures from subway stations that´s not smack in the middle of Stockholm. Aspudden station has a staute of a surrealistic penguin with a big box on its chest greeting travellers when they comes down the escalators. All made out of bronze (I think….It could be be copper.)

I live just 20 meters from the station that’s all red and vivid! It’s called Solna Centrum… Every morning i sit there on the benches wait for the subway-train to arrive and I just get hypnotized by the color of the walls! The red is such a calming, and vivid red… Love it!!

Live in Stockholm and think about them often when I pass, mostly an window to an happier era (most of it was originally made in the 70’s I’m guessing even if some of it is new additions, thus the kitschy style of some of it). A sense of a communal country, mostly lost nowadays, made it possible.

For whoever is interested: the artwork on the stations are all done by different artists who got the honorable task of designing a whole station. This means every station has its own “theme” and style and everyone is sure to find something that suits their taste. I find my current home station very boring, one of my former stations actually creepy(has a permanent exhibit of made up bugs – NASTY!) but others that I simply adore. One of my favourites is Tensta(theres one picture here from there, the one with the penguins and walrus), but it also has less commercials than most stations and instead features signs along the track where it sais “sister and brotherhood” in different languages.

Are the natural/painted rock looking ceilings and walls that resemble caves actual rock or are they molded to look like that?

  52. Julia
    Posted December 8, 2010 at 8:38 am | Permalink

    Its real rock.

  53. Henrik
    Posted December 8, 2010 at 11:24 am | Permalink

It’s real rock, for safety reasons sprayed with concrete, and then painted. Each station has it’s own artistic expression and is planned in detail by builders, painters and artists together.

  54. Posted December 8, 2010 at 10:25 pm | Permalink

Just remember, these are the good, out of context, parts. 95% is still grey rocks, grey floor, some graffiti and advertisings.

My favourite station is Rissne (the 15th photo). Some days I just get off the train, read the walls for 10 minutes and takes the next train to my destination. (sadly the walls has not been cleaned for many years so its hard to read some of the texts)

it’s presumably the longest art-expo in the world, since noone else is claiming the title.
They organize guided tours so you can check these out and learn history and stuff about the artists etc, if you’re interested and ever visit stockholm, check it out.

A fair warning though – the subways do look better on these photographs than in real life. Much of the paint isnt as vivid due to aging and dust.
